There was nothing easy about Liberty-Eylau’s dramatic 5-2 win over Pleasant Grove’s softball team Tuesday at the Lady Hawks’ field.

Both teams were hitting the ball hard, combining for 15 hits in the first four innings. Savannah Phelps’ run-scoring double in the fourth put L-E on top for good at 2-1.

That’s the way the score stayed until the seventh when the Leopards scored three runs. Kayla and Keeley Norris singled to start the seventh, and promptly moved up on stolen bases. Three batters later it was 5-1.

Pleasant Grove did not quit. The Hawks scored a run in their half of the seventh, and had the potential tying run at the plate when the game ended.

“We’ve got a bunch of fighters on this team,” said L-E coach Kendra Cullum. “This is a crosstown rivalry, and I couldn’t be more proud of the girls right now. We continue to put Isabella (Gunderson) in tough situations, and she continues to pitch through them. It’s awesome watching her hit her spots.”

Phelps, Keeley Norris, Tamara Norris, McKenzie Williamson and Tyra Venable had two hits each for L-E. Kaylee Kelley, Emilton Hilton and Zoe Smith had two hits each for Pleasant Grove.
