TEXARKANA, Texas — Texas High took an early lead in its match against Pleasant Grove and held on for a 1-0 victory to open the girls soccer season in steady rain Thursday at Tiger Stadium in Grim Park.
Freshman Alejandra Vargas booted in a free kick 10 minutes into the match against the Lady Tigers' cross-town rivals.
THS sophomore goalkeeper Logan Pilgreen finished with six saves, and the defense — led by Emma Hickerson — thwarted the Lady Hawk attack.
Mya Bowers and Alison Garza also had shots on goal for Texas High, which finished with nine shots on goal.
"This was a great game for the girls to play at home and set the tone for our season," first-year Lady Tiger head coach Hillary Cloud said. "Although I believe we should have scored more, we have a lot of good problems to build on. We will continue growing as a team."
