MARSHALL, Texas — It came down to a last-second shot in overtime.
A 3-pointer just rimmed out for Pleasant Grove, and Tyler Chapel Hill defeated the Hawks in overtime, 66-63, in a Class 4A, Region II bi-district game at Maverick Gym on Tuesday night.
Down by a point at halftime, Pleasant Grove (12-14) came out with fire in the third quarter.
Backed by a pair of treys from Brett Carmony, the Hawks went on a 14-5 run in the third. Carmony finished with a game-high 20 points.
The Bulldogs responded with a pair of 3-pointers toward the end of the third, and the Hawks entered the fourth with a 42-40 lead.
Carmony knocked down a shot from downtown to knot the game at 54-all with 1:14 left in the game. Pleasant Grove had a chance to take the lead late, but a 1-and-1 shot bounced off the front of the rim.
After Matthew Angier drove in for a layup for the Hawks in overtime, Chapel Hill responded with back-to-back treys. The Bulldogs hit on 4 of 4 charity shots down the stretch to make it a 3-point game.
Pleasant Grove inbounded with 3.6 seconds left and got off a 3-pointer, but it just swirled out.
T'vondrick Henry had a double-double for PG with 17 points and 10 rebounds. The Hawks out-rebounded Chapel Hill, 31-26, but had more turnovers, 23-13.
Pleasant Grove jogged into the locker room down by one, 27-26.
The Hawks shot 50 percent from the field (23 of 46), while the Bulldogs hit on 21 of 53 shots for 40 percent.
Henry's putback started a 15-3 run for the Hawks in the first quarter. During the run, Landon Jackson had a slam dunk, Dylan Hopkins hit a layup, Layton Jackson knocked down a 12-foot jumper and a layup, Carmony sank a shot from 3-point land and Marcus Burris hit a putback.
Pleasant Grove found itself up 21-6 at the end of the first, but the Bulldogs rallied back.
Chapel Hill outscored the Hawks 21-5 in the second quarter to take a slight lead after the first half. Layton Jackson's layup and Carmony's trey were the only points scored for Pleasant Grove in the second quarter.
The Hawks hit on 11 of 20 shots for 55 percent in the first half. Turnovers were the plague for PG in the second quarter. At the half, the Hawks had turned the ball over 13 times.
The Bulldogs had just two turnovers in the first half and shot 35 percent from the field (9 of 26).
