PG aims to put the brakes on quick-playing Lincoln | Win would put Lady Hawks in regional final

COMMERCE, Texas — Déj vu is best avoided.

In a rematch of last year's semifinal, Pleasant Grove (28-4) takes on Lincoln (20-8) in a Class 4A, Region II semifinal girls playoff at 6 p.m. today on the basketball courts at Texas A&M University-Commerce's Field House.

"I think a lot of pressure will hurt their offense," Lady Hawks' head coach Marsha Cowling said. "Their main game is defense. They play a lot of in-your-face defense, and they get a lot of steals. It is a lot of what they did last year.

"We have to stay calm, keep our composure and break their press. They don't have any true post players, so our posts have to step up and get the job done. Our defense is going to have to be solid, just like it has been in previous games. We want to slow down the tempo and work for good shots."

Pleasant Grove fell to the Lady Tigers, 71-39, in last year's regional semifinal and looks to elude last year's result.

"I don't think they are as good as they were last year," Cowling said. "I know that they have a new coach and lost some key players. They look like a bunch of guards and play fast. They like to press and run."

Shanequa Henry, Asia Lloyd, Ashanti Levingston, Miaya Ware and Keshawn Davis will start for Pleasant Grove. The Hawks are coming off a 46-43 victory over Bullard in the regional quarterfinals.

Lincoln defeated Aubrey, 59-44, in its regional quarterfinal playoff game. The Tigers are averaging 70.6 points per game in the playoffs and have given up 41.3 average points.

Pleasant Grove has a playoff scoring average of 55.3 points and give up an average of 41.6 points. Ware paced the Hawks with 13 points in PG's win against Bullard in the regional quarterfinals.

Reserves for the Hawks are Taylor Whitaker, Alex Norton, Bryana Block, Phoebe Robertson, Kiyanah Murphy and Winter Crouch.

The winner advances to the Class 4A, Region II final to face either Melissa or Brownsboro at TAMU-C's Field House at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
