TEXARKANA, Texas — No matter which way life bounced, it always bounced toward basketball for Peyton Mathews. Mathews is a junior varsity starter for Pleasant Grove's basketball team. She began playing basketball when she was in the third grade and received her first basketball goal that Christmas.

"I love everything about basketball," Mathews said. "Basketball is an escape for me. When I'm practicing, working out with my teammates or on the bus ride to an out of town game, I don't focus on what's going on out of basketball.

"It takes my mind off things. I have made many valuable memories and friendships from playing basketball. It has not only taught me how to be a better athlete, but it has taught me life lessons as well."

Mathews has learned the importance of staying positive and pushes her teammates to remain positive even in adverse situations.

"My teammates are like my sisters," Mathews said. "Each of them know they can talk to me about anything. I love the bond I have with each of my teammates, as well as with my coaches.

"Since I was young, I wanted to be a Lady Hawk. I am truly honored to be apart of the Pleasant Grove athletic program. I believe we have some of the best coaches around town. My coaches have helped me become a better athlete and have helped me overcome personal problems."

Mathews has interest in the dental field and the nursing field but has not yet decided on her career path. She takes classes at Texarkana College, which will help her get a head start in earning her basics.

The Pleasant Grove basketball player almost gave up on basketball. She decided not to play during her sophomore year, thinking it was the right decision.

"As time went on, I missed what I enjoyed the most and that was basketball," Mathews said.

"I was nervous to get back in. I talked to my old teammates and they were very encouraging."

Mathews ran into a dad of a former teammate in a store.

He asked her if she was playing basketball, and she replied no.

"I felt like it was a sign from God that I needed to play again," she said.

"I texted my coach and told her that I needed to talk to her about playing again. The next day I was in her office doing whatever I could to be a part of the Lady Hawks again. I couldn't be more thankful for the decision I made."
