The Pleasant Grove Hawks boys varsity basketball team won at least a share of the district championship with a 75-64 win over Gilmer Friday at Hawks Gym.
The game was a thriller with 5 lead changes with the Hawks finishing on top 75-64 at the final buzzer. Pleasant Grove (15-5, 8-0) can win the district championship outright with a win Tuesday at Paris. The PG at Paris game will be the final district game of the year.
Pleasant Grove was led by all 6 seniors on their roster. T’vondrick Henry scored 22 points, Sam Bradshaw scored 11 points while Torey Phillips pitched in with ten. Matt Angier scored 9 points and senior Brett Carmony had 7 points. Tre Stuart who is also a senior scored 5 points.
T’vondrick Henry said the Hawks are getting better. Henry’s teammate Torey Phillips said it was a touch game. “We kept fighting and came out on top,” Phillips said.
Hawks Coach Dwight McCowan said that it was tough and credited Gilmer for being a tough match. However, Coach McCowan said the Hawks players deserved all the credit for the win.
“We were blessed to come back in the fourth quarter,” Coach McCowan said. “We played tough, hats off to our kids.”
Gilmer (5-3 in district) was led by junior Jay Rockwell. Rockwell poured in 20 points while sophomore sensation Rowan Fluellen scored nine. Keith Rockwell scored 8 points for the Buckeyes and Mason Hunt scored seven.
Pleasant Grove will conclude their district season Tuesday at Paris. The PG at Paris game will be live on 94.1 FM ESPN-Texarkana.
