MARSHALL, Texas — Kilgore outscored Pleasant Grove in the middle quarters, 31-18, and went on to a 62-57 victory in a Class 4A bi-district boys basketball game on Monday at Maverick Gym.

"We just came up short," Hawks head coach Dwight McCowan said. "We had a bad 4-minute stretch where they started knocking down shots and we just didn't. We didn't turn the ball over a lot, they made shots and we didn't; that is how basketball goes sometimes.

"I told the team that they may not understand it now, maybe in a month or two, but we had a lot of accomplishments this year. Sometimes the ball just doesn't bounce your way, and it didn't bounce our way tonight."

Pleasant Grove (16-7) senior T'Vondrick Henry had a double-double with 28 points and 10 rebounds, while senior Torey Phillips finished with 10 boards and six points.

The Hawks had just 10 turnovers compared to 14 for the Bulldogs. Kilgore outrebounded Pleasant Grove, 31-26.

Pleasant Grove shot 41 percent from the field on 19-of-46 shooting, while Kilgore hit on 22 of 46 shots for 48 percent. The Hawks hit on just 14 of 26 charity shots for 53.8 percent. The Bulldogs were 63.6 percent from the stripe on 14-of-22 shooting.

Tre Stuart, a Pleasant Grove senior, had nine points, including a pair of treys, while teammate freshman Torion Phillips scored eight.

Henry scored eight of his 28 points in the first quarter, and the Hawks built a 20-12 lead. PG started the game on a 15-4 run.

Kilgore gained momentum as it went on a 12-2 run in the final half of the second quarter to inch within two points at intermission, 30-28. The Bulldogs outscored the Hawks in the third, 15-8, and took a five-point lead into the final stanza, 43-38.

Pleasant Grove fought fiercely, but its tenacity was matched by Kilgore (16-8) in the final quarter. The Bulldogs never trailed after the third quarter and matched the Hawks' fourth-quarter point production, 19-19.

Henry poured in 12 points in the fourth quarter for Pleasant Grove in a strong effort. His 12 points in the fourth, as well as his 28 total points, were a game-high.
