ARLINGTON, Texas — Almost one year to the day, Pleasant Grove's football team was able to satisfy a hunger the Hawks were left with after finishing second to Cuero in the 2018 state final. Led by 21 seniors — most of whom were a part of the school's first state championship team in 2017 — PG outclassed and manhandled a talented Wimberley team to win the Class 4A, Division II title — the Hawks second in three years.
"What these kids have done for our program, you can't do any better than that," Gibson said. "If we came up short today, we were going to do it going full tilt. They were just able to get it done today, and a lot of that is just what kind of kids they are."
It wasn't the cleanest game the Hawks had played in the postseason this fall, but Pleasant Grove was not going to be denied. Following two first-half turnovers, the PG defense forced quick 3-and-outs by the Texans, and the Hawks pulled away with a 14-7 rally in the second half. Pleasant Grove never veered from its game plan: to thwart the Wimberley defense and control the clock with a pounding rush attack.
Bruce Garrett, a signee to BYU, earned Offensive MVP honors with 25 carries for 254 yards — a 10.2-yard average — and three touchdowns, the offensive line dominated in the trenches, and the defensive front harassed the Texans in the backfield all game long.
Garrett got his second rushing TD with 1:26 left in the second quarter to put the Hawks up for good.
Defensive end Marcus Burris was picked as the Defensive MVP with his two sacks for a loss of 25 yards and pass breakup. There were many candidates on the defensive side for the Hawks, who had eight stops behind the line of scrimmage on 51 Wimberley snaps.
K.J. Hicks went nearly untouched in returning the game's opening kickoff 88 yards to paydirt, and despite the Texans tying the score before the end of the first quarter, it was almost all PG from that point on. Down 21 points, the Texans scored a meaningless touchdown with 2:00 left to play.
Garrett sandwiched touchdowns of 11 (at the end of the first half) and 31 yards around Ben Harmon's 29-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Watkins late in the third quarter to give Pleasant Grove a 14-point advantage.
Hicks rushed for 88 yards on 19 totes, and Logan Johnson added nine carries for 49 yards. On 60 rushes, Pleasant Grove netted 397 yards on the ground. The Black Hawk defense limited the Texans to just 252 yards of total offense, with just 37 coming on the ground.
Harmon, one of several 3-year starters for the Hawks, was 2-of-6 for 40 yards with the TD and an interception.
"We had unfinished business since last year, and we finished it tonight," Harmon said. "We worked hard to get here, and it paid off."
