PG beats Marshall, Carthage

MARSHALL, Texas—Pleasant Grove ripped host Marshall, 16-1, and then edged Carthage, 3-2, to sweep a pair of games in the Maverick Invitational baseball tournament Friday.

The Hawks (6-3) went 3-1 during the tournament. Pleasant Grove opens District 15-4A play at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Pittsburg.

In the romp over Marshall, the Hawks banged out 17 hits, including eight for extra bases. Keaton Russo slugged a grand slam and double to drive in four runs, Jackson Cobb had three hits, including a pair of doubles, to drive in three runs, and Tucker Anderson had two hits, including a double to plate three runs.

Marshall Cox, Ben Wilson and Parker Twisdale had two hits each, Seth Hopkins a double, and Brock Bearden an RBI-single for Pleasant Grove.

Alex Galvan struck out seven in six innings to pick up the win.

Ryan Galvan went the distance and fanned eight to notch the win over Carthage.

Anderson had an RBI-single, Russo two hits, Hopkins a double, and Andrew LeGrand a hit against the Bulldogs.

In Thursday games, the Hawks lost to Carthage, 2-0, and then rebounded to trim Marshall, 3-2.

Ben Harmon and Russo had two hits each against Carthage and Anderson gave up four hits and took the pitching loss.

Coe Blain allowed one hit and struck out seven over six innings to pick up the win on the mound against the Mavericks. Marshall Oubre got the save.

Parker Twisdale led PG with a double and Anderson, LeGrand and Russo had a hit each.
